Interactive email: what's possible with HTML/CSS and AMP
Carousels, tap-to-reveal, accordions and more — how interactive HTML and AMP for Email work, where they land, and how Brandblox Emails builds both from one canvas.

Most emails are still static: an image, some copy and a button. Interactive email changes that by letting people do things in the inbox — flick through a carousel, open an FAQ, reveal an offer — without leaving the email.
It's one of the strongest ways to stand out, but it comes with real constraints. Here's what's possible, where it works, and how Brandblox Emails approaches it: interactive Blox with HTML behaviour plus an AMP version when you need it — without overclaiming what every inbox can do.
What can interactive email do?
Many interactive patterns from the web can be adapted for email. Common examples:
- Product carousels — swipe or tap through products or features.
- Accordions — expandable FAQs or specs that keep long content tidy.
- Tap-to-reveal — hidden content on tap, useful for launches and offers.
- Tabs and hotspots — explore options or pin detail without leaving the message.
- Quizzes and games — possible with careful HTML/CSS, but heavier to build and test by hand.
In Brandblox Emails the interactive Blox types are tap-to-reveal, carousels, accordions, hotspots and tabs. You drop them onto a branded canvas like any other Blox; you don't hand-code the checkbox hacks yourself.
1. Interactive HTML and CSS
Most interactive email is clever HTML and CSS — often hidden form controls plus CSS selectors (the "checkbox hack"). It works in clients that support the necessary CSS, most notably Apple Mail on iPhone, iPad and Mac, plus some webmail.
It needs no special sender registration. Where interactivity isn't supported, the same email should fall back to a complete static experience.
2. AMP for Email
AMP for Email adds dynamic, app-like features in supporting clients — notably Gmail (and Yahoo Mail among others). Brandblox can generate an AMP version alongside your HTML from the same build, so interactive modules reach Gmail users as well as Apple Mail — when your sending setup allows it.
AMP is not automatic for every sender:
- You typically need to register as an AMP sender with Google (and meet authentication requirements such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC).
- You send an AMP part alongside regular HTML; ESPs must accept AMP for Email.
- Brandblox creates and previews the AMP twin from your canvas — it does not replace ESP registration or inbox policy.

How many recipients can see it?
Combined, interactive HTML and AMP can reach a large share of opens — Apple Mail / iOS and Gmail together cover a big portion of consumer opens in industry market-share reports. Two caveats:
- Apple's share is inflated by Mail Privacy Protection pre-loading emails.
- Your audience is what counts. Business lists often skew Outlook, which supports very little interactivity. Check your own client breakdown before betting a campaign on interaction alone.
Always design for the fallback
Treat interactivity as a progressive enhancement — the same rule as in our design best practices:
- Design so the email works completely without interactivity. Message, offer and CTA stay clear.
- Add the interactive layer for clients that support it.
- Test both HTML and AMP (when used) across your key clients.
A well-built interactive email shows each recipient the best version their client can handle. Nobody should get a broken experience.
Is it worth it?
Interactive email takes more care than a static send, but it can lift engagement when it gives people something useful to do — explore a product, find the right option, reveal an offer — rather than movement for its own sake. The honest way to know is a holdout test against a static version on the metric that matters for that campaign.
Hand-coding interactive modules and dual HTML/AMP fallbacks is usually what keeps teams from trying. Brandblox Emails shortens that path: interactive Blox in minutes, AMP generated from the same build, export to the platforms you already run. Other builders offer some interactive or AMP blocks too — what's distinct here is brand-locked production from your Brands system (see how it works), with HTML and AMP from one canvas rather than a blank editor rebuild. Published pricing starts with a free trial — no quote required.
Make interactivity repeatable
Building interactive emails from scratch every time is expensive. Put interactive modules in your design system once, with fallbacks built in, so the team can drop a carousel or accordion into any email. That's the job of brand-locked Blox — not a one-off coded experiment for a single send.
